Composite Resin Fillings (Tooth-Colored Fillings)
Composite is a mixture of acrylic resin and powdered glass-like particles that produce a tooth-colored filling. This type of material may be self-hardening or may be hardened by exposure to blue light. Composite is used for fillings, crowns, & veneers. Sometimes it is used to replace a portion of a broken or chipped tooth. There are many advantages to tooth-colored restorations:
- Resin fillings are usually completed in a single visit.
- The resin material is bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth.
- The fillings are durable, tissue compatible, and kind to the opposing teeth.
- Resin fillings allow us to preserve the greatest amount of natural tooth structure.
- Most importantly, color and shading can be matched to the existing tooth.
Our dentists create fillings that are not only beautiful (or unnoticeable) but also add strength to weakened teeth.
When you visit our office for your dental filling, our dentists may first numb the area by using local anesthesia. A hand-piece (the drill) is then used to remove the decay. The surface of the prepared tooth is lightly etched with an acid gel. A bonding liquid is then applied to the preparation. Once the bonding liquid sets, the filling is placed. Once set, the dentist will trim, smooth, and polish the filling restoration to a natural appearance.
